Apparently, the PS3 Yellow Light Of Death happens 18 to 24 months after purchase, conveniently 6+ months after the warranty expires. Sony did acknowledged the PS3 yellow light of death, reporting that around 12,500 of the consoles sold in the UK had this error since March 2007. But because the consoles are failing after the warranty expires, people are told to send it off to Sony and pay $200 for a refurbished one delivered to their door, or take the console to a repair shop to have it fixed.

However, BBC’s Watchdog didn’t like the “range of issues” statement and sent sixteen consoles owned by their viewers who had thePS3 yellow light of death. A PS3 Repairman disassembled the consoles and heated the motherboard, re-heating the solder so it will metal and repair bad connections between all of the components and the main board. After the repair, all 16 consoles worked again.
